Welcome back to a new term!

Now that your child is in Year 5, they will have a fun, but challenging year ahead of them. The children have settled back to the new term well and have already set a super example for the younger children; we hope this continues throughout the year. We have got an exciting term planned and right from the start, Year 5 need to be organised and prepared. This letter is to give you and your child an idea of the topics we will be covering this term in Year 5.

Maths (Numeracy)

We will be covering place value, ordering and rounding numbers, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. We will also complete weekly Arithmetic tests.

English (Literacy)

This term we will be studying a variety of texts, including A Thousand Arabian Nights. Our writing will include diary entries, explanations, recounts, poetry and poetic style. We will also focus on Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation. Through drama activities we will also practise our Speaking and Listening.

This term we will learn about Properties of Materials. We will complete investigations to understand how different materials work.

We will be exploring rounds, working with different instruments, composing and developing our singing voices. We will be learning and performing a variety of songs for our production at the end of term. During the year, all children will learn ukulele with Lucy.

This term we will be learning more about Athletics, followed by invasion games. Children should wear the correct P.E kit to school every Tuesday.

Computing (ICT)

Over the term we will be using a variety of software to create multimedia presentations and will be improving our word processing skills. We will be making use of the Internet and class iPads. We will be using Purple Mash to learn about Coding.

Modern Foreign Languages

The children will begin their journey in learning Spanish. We shall learn about the country and where Spanish is spoken in the world.

Artwork will be linked to the main topics and we will be concentrating on line, tone, colour, shape and space. We will be exploring colouring and blending using paint.

As part of Geography, we learn all about Fair Trade: what it is, why it is important and who it helps.

Religious Education

We will be learning all about Islam and what it means to be Muslim in Modern Britain today.

The Golden Age of Islam compared to Middle Age Britain. We will be studying all about how life was during these times and comparing Britain to many aspects of the rise of Islamic culture and technology.

Children in Year 5 are allowed to bring in a healthy snack to school for breaktime. This could be a piece of fruit or a breakfast bar. No chocolates, sweets, or crisps! They can also bring in their own reusable water bottle.

Reading and Homework

Your child will be taking home a reading folder every evening. This will contain their reading book and reading journal.

Please remember that the most important work your child should do at home is to read on a regular basis, both to themselves and to you (no they are not too old, despite what they might say!) You can really help your child by listening to them read every evening, even if is only for five minutes. As a minimum we expect children to have read at home four times per week (either by themselves, with an adult or a mixture of the two). Children should be heard by an adult twice per week. Write the page they read up to in their reading journal.

Children will also have spellings to learn and every Monday they will have a spelling test.

Children also need to practise their times tables regularly, including the use of TTRS. Please help them to do this, whenever you can – on a long journey, walking to school, waiting for a bus etc.

Every Friday your child will be set homework, often using Purple Mash. Please make sure your child completes their homework by the due date of Tuesday.

Children should not be at school when unwell (whether symptoms are COVID-19 related or not). Please follow the school guidance on Covid-19. For further information, see the school website:

Your child will need to come to school every TUESDAY in their PE Kit (tracksuit bottoms would be advisable as the weather is getting colder). They will wear this all day and it should be washed before the following week.

Please make sure that your child has a coat in school every day. We shall be using the outdoors as much as possible even when it gets colder.
